In this article we discuss some topical constructions on the African body in the first half of the 19th century in Rio de Janeiro. We consider the decades from 30 to 50 – contexts of economic expansion and massive entry of Africans in the city of Rio de Janeiro –as important in the construction of the idea of body for enslaved Africans in their physical and bodily dimensions. Based on series of newspaper advertisements, police records, travelers' reports and agricultural manuals written by doctors we have analyzed the assemblages of some narratives about the African body, arguing how various diacritical signs were triggered by merchants, masters, doctors, and police officers.Neste artigo abordamos algumas construções tópicas sobre o corpo a...
